The Problem Description
A Temptation is an internal urge or external prompt that entices a person to do
wrong. It may be of short duration, but can often continue and return, if not
dismissed decisively. Temptations can be controlled and can have little impact
on an individual's life. However, if a person continually yields to temptation
or reacts in a fleshly way to provocation, control is lost and the temptations
begin to rule.
A Trial is usually a process or circumstance of longer duration and is often
outside individual control. It may include hardship, physical pain, continued
emotional strain, loneliness, ecclesial difficulties, or prolonged irritation
and annoyance. Trials are used by God to test and prove His children, and to refine
the believer's faith and character. While some trials may be avoided or eliminated
entirely, many cannot.
Significant Differences
Being tempted is not the same as sinning. Giving in to temptation is sin.
We need to mourn our disobedience and repent from our sins.
Trial is not a Punishment from God. Trial is a test used by God to discipline
us for our good. We need to endure affliction and rejoice when we meet various
trials, for we understand their purpose.
